Nepal bags ACC-U19 Elite Cup for fourth time

ACC U-19 Elite cup winner Nepal team

Nepal beat Afghanistan by 48 runs in the ACC U-19 Elite Cup finals played at Kinrara Oval ground in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia today and qualified for ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup 2008. This is the fourth time Nepal won this tournament.

After winning the toss, Nepal team elected to bat first and scored the modest of 172 runs loosing all wickets in 49.4 overs. For Nepal team Akash Gupta scored 48 runs while Sagar Khadka contributed 32 runs, skipper Parash Khadka 27 runs, Raj Shrestha 14 runs and Mahesh Chhetri 13 runs to set up the target of 173 runs to Afghanistan.

Spirited Afghanistan were all out for 124 runs in 45.5 overs despite captain Sher Sherzai’s 66 runs contribution. Sherzai was picked the man of the match for the finals.

Nepal was unbeaten throughout the tournament with win against Singapore, Malaysia, Oman and a rain washed draw with Thailand to secure a place in the ACC U-19 World Cup. In semi-final, Nepal ousted the host Malaysia again.

winning ACC-U19 Elite Cup, Nepal joined Papua New Guinea (from the East Asia-Pacific Region), Ireland (from the Europe Region), Bermuda (from the Americas Region), the ICC’s 10 Full Members and hosts Malaysia at the 16-team ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup to be played from 17 February to 2 March 2008.

Nepal finished ninth at the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup 2006 ahead of both New Zealand and South Africa both of which they defeated. Till now Nepal have beaten five Full Members at the last three ICC U-19 Cricket World Cups.
