On Wednesday, 28 May 2008, Nepal became the world’s newest republic.  After hours of delay, at 11:30PM, the Constituent Assembly elected through the Constituent Assembly Election on 10 April proposed and passed the motion to declare Nepal a Federal Democratic Republic.  To speak to us about that, and many other issues, Constituent Assembly member Gagan Thapa joins us for an exclusive conversation.

Nepal world’s newest republic, king ordinary citizen

To loud cheers and resounding handclaps, the first sitting of the Constituent Assembly (CA) unanimously declared the country a republic late on Wednesday night, with only four votes against.

The much-anticipated meeting took the decision late on Wednesday night after a nearly ten-and-a-half-hour delay, effectively ending the 240-year-old institution of monarchy and making the king an ordinary citizen.

The Chairman of the CA KB Gurung announced that the proposal to declare the country a federal democratic republic which was tabled at the CA meet was passed with a majority vote on Wednesday at the historic meeting held at the Birendra International Convention Centre (BICC) in the capital.

Out of a total 564 votes, the proposal garnered 560 votes in its favour, while only four votes were cast against the proposal.

“In the context of implementing a republic in the country, the CA meeting directs the now then King residing at the Narayanhiti palace and the private secretariat structure concerning him to leave within fifteen-days,” said  Gurung reading out the government’s decision.

Preparation for Non-Resident Nepali Regional Conference complete

The Non-Resident Nepali Association is organizing a Regional Conference on May 24 and 25, 2008.  The preparations for the conference are complete.  The conference will be held in Bangkok, Thailand.  Minister of Information and Communications and Spokesperson of the Nepal Government will be the chief guest of the conference.  The conference is being graced by guests from Nepal and Thailand including General (Rt.) Saiyud Kerdphol  - Former Supreme Commander of Royal Thai Army and Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs - Nepal, Nepali Ambassadors in Thailand and Myanmar.  The conference is set to deliberate on issues of the Non-Resident Nepalis in the Asia-Pacific region.  The theme has been set as “Taking foreign employment from Nepal to a higher plane”.

The conference organization is being coordinated by a coordinating committee headed by Mr. Dev Man Hirachan - Vice President of NRNA.  About 200 delegates including NRNA President Dr. Upendra Mahato are set to participate. A number of high profile guests including the President of Federation of Nepalese Chambers and Commerce and Industry, Nepal Bar Association, Nepal Association of Foreign Employment Agencies are set to participate in the conference.

The belief and the practice of Buddhism in Nepal dates back to the time of Prince Siddharth Gautam, who was born in the southern Terai region of the country in about 543 BC. Till he was 29, the young prince led a very sheltered life in the royal palace of his father. He was completely unaware of the tragedies of everyday life. One day, he convinced his charioteer to take him outside the walls of his palace and he was shocked to see the sight of an old man, a cripple, and a corpse.

The realization that there was more to life than the lavish and luxurious life he was leading, made him abandon all the worldly pleasures and search for enlightenment and the true meaning of life.
