Nepal world’s newest republic, king ordinary citizen

To loud cheers and resounding handclaps, the first sitting of the Constituent Assembly (CA) unanimously declared the country a republic late on Wednesday night, with only four votes against.

The much-anticipated meeting took the decision late on Wednesday night after a nearly ten-and-a-half-hour delay, effectively ending the 240-year-old institution of monarchy and making the king an ordinary citizen.

The Chairman of the CA KB Gurung announced that the proposal to declare the country a federal democratic republic which was tabled at the CA meet was passed with a majority vote on Wednesday at the historic meeting held at the Birendra International Convention Centre (BICC) in the capital.

Out of a total 564 votes, the proposal garnered 560 votes in its favour, while only four votes were cast against the proposal.

“In the context of implementing a republic in the country, the CA meeting directs the now then King residing at the Narayanhiti palace and the private secretariat structure concerning him to leave within fifteen-days,” said  Gurung reading out the government’s decision.

Nepal’s 1st Low-cost Airlines Begins Operation

Yeti Airlines International, a joint venture between Yeti Airlines and Air Arabia, began international flights from Wednesday (23 Jan 2008), with its inaugural flight taking off to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia this morning.

The airline, which is also known as, is scheduled to operate three flights a week to Kuala Lumpur and thrice-weekly flights to Sharjah, using a Boeing 737-800 aircraft. It is the first Nepali low-cost carrier and the first to have foreign investment scheduled.

Speaking at a function held to inaugurate its flights, Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Prithivi Subba Gurung said its operation will help to provide easy connections to Nepali working abroad and several more tourists to visit Nepal.

Lila Mani Poudel, secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, asked the airline to provide better services to the Nepali workers with good and respectful treatment.

Singaporean students build library in Kaski, Nepal

While university students in the capital city spend their time sunning themselves on campus rooftops, a group of students from the Singapore Management University have constructed a library worth Rs 500,000 and renovated the school building of Harisiddi Primary School at Armala VDC of Kaski district.

During their 17-day stay in the village, the students also distributed 42 improved hearths to the villagers on the initiative of Pokhara Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

Last year too, students from the same university had constructed a library for Janata Primary School at Ward No 2 of the same VDC.

Room to Read, a non-governmental organization working in the education sector, has announced to provide 1,000 books to the newly established library.


Old age home by NRN

An old age home has been built by NRN at Devghat, a sacred religious site, in Chitwan. The well-equipped building contains 58 beds along with a dining room, a meeting hall and rest rooms.

Constructed at a cost of Rs 14 million, the building was jointly inaugurated by NRN president Dr. Upendra Mahato, Swami Atmananda Giri and Chandiraj Dhakal, president of Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

Jiba Lamichhane, representative of the NRN International council for Russia informed that over 50 Nepalis from 13 countries contributed for the building.

Chandi Raj Dhakal , president of FNCCI demanded that the government create investment0-friendly environment in the country.
